               Comfort-Aire Whole House Dehumidifier (WHD-130A)

              - WHD-130A requires very little maintance. Also, you can run the dehumidifier continuously and automatically with the Drain line attached to the trap outlet.

              - Similar to other dehumidifier, it comes with auto overflow shut off protection and defrost function (able to work from 40°F - 105°F).

              - Easy to use control panel.

Unfortunately, sicne the dehumidifier is ducted into an existing system, you will need to find someone to get it professional installed.

Use a dehumidifier for Baby coughs

“The best way to treat babies with a cough is to use a dehumidifier for congested coughs, or a humidifier for dry coughs, and ensure the child is well-hydrated.”

                  (Source)

Why not just give your baby cough medicine?

I highly recommend you to talk to your doctor before you give your baby any kind of cough syrup. According to a study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one third of the 7,000 toddlers who use hospital emergency rooms suffered from allergic reaction every year. Another report from The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
warned parents NOT TO use over-the-counter suppressant, antihistamine or similar products without a prescription from doctor. FDA has also warned parents that cold and cough medicine will cause adverse side effect to children under two years old.

                  (Announcement from FDA)

                  Remedies for baby cough?

In addition to a dehumidifier, warm water is also an effective and natural way to cure baby cough. You can bathe your baby into warm water with a few drops of eucalyptus oil. Herbal rub is also a good way cure baby cough. All you need to do is to mix 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 2 drops of eucalyptus oil together, and rub it on the chest and back of your baby. After the mixture vaporized, you will realize that your baby breathes a lot easier than before. Also, the mixture is good to calm your baby down and make him/her a lot easier to sleep. If you find the two methods mentioned above is too annoying, simply grab a plastic suctioning bulb from the supermarket. It is a quick and easy way to help relieve his symptoms.

If you are skeptical about the remedies mentioned above, here is the advice from Dr. Ben Spitalnick (Review of this Doctor):

“This is going to sound old timey but there are some old remedies that do still work, a dehumidifier by the bedside, pushing fluids, help you kids drink that helps. Tylenol and Motrin fever medicine help them feel better and if you think your child is sick enough to need medicine have your doctor check them out.”

Humidex Dehumidifiers - Get a Humidex or Dehumidifier?

Probably many of you want to find a good way to solve the moisture problem in your basement, and that is why you are here reading articles to learn more about dehumidifiers. For those of you who do spend time doing your research, you would find a product called Humidex which is also claim to help solve your basement moisture problem. You may probably wonder whether or not you should spend extra dollar to get a Humidex instead. You are lucky to have found AirDehumidifier.com, because we have already done the research for you so that you don’t have to spend 2-3 hours finding information on Google or Yahoo! Here is our view on this Dehumidifier vs. Humidex debate:

Before we get to the meat of the story, I thing it would be necessary to give you some information about what a Humidex is (just in case you are too lazy to do your research). Basically, Humidex is a ventilation unit that will exhaust the trapped moist, excess humidity or contaminated air to outside through a duct. The air is then replaced by warmer and fresher air from outdoors or upper level. With the built-in Humidstat, Humidex can continues to remove moist air from the house and replace it with warmer air, which should theoretically lower the relative humidity.

According to both the experts and the users experience, using Humidex is 90% less expensive to run than a dehumidifier because it consumes only 38 watts of electricity, which should on average cost you $2 a month on your electric bill. What’s more powerful is that it can act as a whole house dehumidifier to dehumidify your basement, crawl space and upper levels.

                    It sounds good, doesn’t it?

Even though it is much cheaper to run a Humidex than a dehumidifier, the upfront cost of a Humidex is approximately 7 times than the price of a dehumidifier. A fully installed Humidex costs from $1500 to $1800. Even if you don’t mind using a second hand Humidex, the installation cost alone by local installer should cost you around $250, which already allows you to get a brand dehumidifier online plus shipping. You really need to do you own math to see if buying a Humidex is a smart choice.

Moreover, if the humidity ratio of the air outside your house is higher than the ratio inside, lots of moist air is added to the house and it will result in an expensive electric bill. There is no doubt that when the air outside is dry, Humidex is doing a good job keeping the moisture down. However, there is “NO guarantee” that it will perform as well when the outside air is no longer cold or dry. That means the ability of Humidex, as an air exchanger, to reduce humidity in your house depends highly on the condition outside of your house. If a salesperson comes to you telling you that it is the only way to solve your year-round moisture problem, chances are s/he is trying to ripped you off. In order to drain the moistuer air in your house, which is NOT a function of Humidex, you still need a dehumidifier.

Notice that I am NOT saying Humidex doesn’t work. It does help you to lower the humitidy in your house. What I am trying to point out is that it is hard to tell whether a dehumidifier or Humidex will better suit your needs. You really have to do your own math to see which option is better for your house.

Here is what a happy customer said about Humidex:

“I had a humidex in my last home and it does what it says. My basement
was as dry as it was when I was using a dehumidifier, however, my
electric bill was much lower with the humidex.”

Are you willing to pay more upfront so that you can have a lower electric bill in the future? That is the question you should be asking yourself.

Cheap Dehumidifier that covers upto 500 sq ft?

Here is the original question I saw on Yahoo! Answers:

i need a cheap home dehumidifier one for a room 500sq feet and up like 500 to 800 should be good…would like to spend no more then 150 200 max if ….possible would like to have these features or some of them

Auto shut off when the water storage tray is full

Some sort of visual indicator that the water tray is full

Built in humidistat (humidity meter / hygrometer) that can automatically control the humidity of the room(this is the most important one)

A frost sensor that will switch off the unit if it gets too cold.
                      Low noise levels

At first glance, a 25-30 pint dehumidifier such as Sunpentown SD-25A or Comfort-Aire 30-Pint (BHD-301) Dehumidifier should meet his/her requirement. Both dehumidifiers have the auto defrost and auto restart capability, and they can shut off automatically when the water container is full. For the Comfort-Aire BHD-301dehumidifier, it will alert you with an audible 3 beeps in addition to a full indicator shown on the panel. To control the humidity of the room, you will first have to have a desired humidity level in mind (e.g. 35%) before choosing that setting manually on the panel. Once you are done with the setting, the built in humidistat will do the work for you automatically. There is also an option that will allow you to attach a drainage line to the unit and allow gravity to feed the water out of the unit, so that you can run the dehumidifier for a long time.

                      Price Comparison:

However, we should keep in mind that most of the time we are using a dehumidifier is when the humidity is high than 55%. A 50 pint or higher dehumidifier will do a much better job in this case (Read: How to choose a dehumidifier article). The elctronic LCD panel looks much better than the two models mentioned above, and there is a timer that will allow you to control when to start/stop the dehumidifier. In addition, there are 4 easy roll casters that will allow you to move it around the house.

Since there is almost ALWAYS a DeLonghi 50 Pint Digital Dehumidifier DE500P selling on Ebay for less than $200, I don’t see why you should not buy a 50 pint dehumidifier instead.

                        Dehumidifier related news:

A computer program called Smart House Adaptive Control System controls the house’s appliances. This program, designed by students on the project, senses when different appliances need to be turned on or off by the house through a central computer. (Source)

                        Q. I am writing in reference to replacing my home’s 22 windows. Our home is 17 years old, and during the years we have added two additions; an apartment for my mother-in-law and another one over the garage. We have a very large family: six children, two of us and Nana. We have had a problem with moisture in the main part of the house since we take eight showers a day plus cooking, etc. Our only bathroom is at the top of the front-door stairs and the bedrooms surround it. We added outside venting, run a dehumidifier and try to open the windows daily, weather permitting. Well, our window frames are moldy.

We sanded them, bleached them, treated them, refinished and sealed them, but the mold keeps coming back. We don’t want to replace windows and have the same thing happen. I wrote to Andersen asking if they would custom-make a double-hung, wood window with vinyl casing around both sides. They told me they couldn’t; only the outside of the frame is vinyl. They referred me to a new window company they took over — Skyline, which are all-vinyl windows. I didn’t want to go all-vinyl and wanted to stay wood with a vinyl covering for ease of cleaning and maintenance.

Do you have any suggestions? Do you recommend all-vinyl windows, or do I stay away from them? Do you recommend Skyline windows, or are they an unknown entity?

                        Milton, Vt.

                        A. Sorry, I do not know anything about Skyline windows. However, if Andersen has acquired the company and is recommending these windows, they must be of good quality. There are other high-quality, all-vinyl windows. Just be sure that you deal with a time-tested, reputable firm. (Some firms selling windows do not stay around long). You may want to look into the fiberglass windows that Marvin makes, where you have a choice of fiberglass outside and wood inside, or all fiberglass.

The windows may also get moldy since you have such a high indoor relative humidity (RH), but they won’t rot. Dehumidifiers are not too effective in winter. You may also want to look into one or more wall-type air-to-air heat exchangers to deal with the excessive RH; that will be less expensive than a whole-house air-to-air heat exchanger, but the latter will do a more effective job.                            Save Money on Dehumidifiers

How to save up to $200 on a dehumidifier?

As a site owner of a dehumidifier site, I love to find information about dehumidifiers and share them here at AirDehumidifier.com. There are tons of “price comparison script” (ads lol) on this site that will allow you the get the best bargain in the market, but I am yet to find a hot deal or slick deal to share with you that will pop your eyes. I don’t know how many of you will spend time comparing prices before you buy a dehumidifier, but it is definitely not a bad idea to see what other options you have before you come to the final decision on buying a dehumidifier.

To have a sense of how much money you will save, please have a look at the original price of a Santa Fe Dehumidifier (Click on the pic to enlarge):

                          santa fe dehumidifier original price

Notice that shipping, which costs about $50 bucks, is NOT included in the case. You are expected to pay around $1100 to get this brand new dehumidifier home.

Now let’s have a look at how much it costs:

Yes! The EXACT same model is selling for only $800 (shipping included) on ebay.

                          So what is the catch?

They are all brand new items. However, if you read the description carefully, you will notice a line saying the “Item may have cosmetic defects (scratch / dent damage) that do not affect its functionality”. My view is that if you are looking for a “brand new” dehumidifier that can function properly without much concern on its appearance, it is a real slick deals for you.

I have included a list of those “slick deals” for you at the bottom of this post. They are updated automatically from ebay, so do bookmark this post and check back on regular basis if you are looking for this kind of slick deals.

How about a 100% brand new dehumidifier?

Most deals on ebay, which is usually 20% to 30% off the “market price”, are so-called refurbished, open box or store demo item (but brand new in terms of its functionality). If you DO want a 100% brand new dehumidifier, there is still a high chance you can save up to 5% to 7%. Once you have a specific model of dehumidifier in mind (e.g. Soleus CFM-40 or Whirlpool AD70USS), do a quick search on price comparison site like shopping.com or shopzilla.com using its model number to see where you can find a better deal.

                             Dehumidifier Cause of House Fire

A dehumidifier caught fire Saturday in the 5100 block of White Oak Road bringing out 16 pieces of apparatus, including two medical units. (Source)

This is not the first time I heard about the risk posed by a dehumidifier. Not too long ago Whirlpool had recalled approximately 1.4 million dehumidifiers with serial numbers that begin with QG, QH, QJ, QK or QL (More info here). It seems to me that as a site owner of a dehumidifier site, I ought to write more on this issue to let the owners or buyers to keep aware of this potential threat and to lower their exposure to this risk.

For those of you who own a dehumidifier or about to own one, you should always keep in mind that a dehumidifier is as likely to catch fire as other home appliances. Similar to other electrical appliances, the risk of having a fire can be reduced dramatically if proper maintenance is performed on regular basis. If you are worried about the safeness of dehumidifiers after reading this news, here is what a licensed contractor said in response to this news:

A working dehumidifier will not cause a fire if it is working and connected properly. They are no more apt to cause a fire than any other electrical appliance. If the unit overheats it will shut off on the internal overload protection. If it draws to much electricity from the outlet, it will trip the circuit breaker. Those items will prevent a fire. A dehumidifier does use a fair amount of current, so the plug will get warm (not hot), to the touch. If the unit is working, stop worrying about it. It will be fine. Lightning causes many more home fires than dehumidifiers.

I would like to encourage you to take a look at our Dehumidifier maintenance guide article if you are serious about protecting your family and property.
