Tips to perform maintenance for a dehumidifier

Probably not many of you who owns a dehumidifier will take the time to read the user manual that comes with the dehumidifier. Lots of useful maintenance information was in fact included in the manual. I strongly recommend you reading the user manual to learn more about how to perform maintenance for your dehumidifier properly. Before we get into the maintenance parts, here are a few things that you SHOULD BE AWARE of when using your dehumidifier:

1) To reduce the risk posed by a dehumidifier (or any other home appliances), you should never store or use gasoline or other
flammable liquids near your dehumidifier.

2) Have a qualified electrician to check the wiring and fuses if you have been using your dehumidifier for a while.

3) Do NOT operate a dehumidifier with damaged power cord. If it is damaged, replace one with the same type and amperage rating.

4) Do not block the air intake. Overheating is one of the major causes of firing. You can reduce the risk of firing by making sure you don't block the air intake when operating a dehumidifier.

How to perform annual maintenance?

As mentioned before, user mannual is a great place to learn how to perform maintenance for your dehumidifeir. Make sure you unplug the dehumidifier before you do anything on it.  Annual maintenance usually includes:

1) Inspection: Check to see if there is any damaged electrical cord and replace it if appropiate. Damaged cord and wiring is very likely to lead to fire in your house.

2) Air Filter:  Wash the air filter annually and replace it if necessary.

3) Keep Out Dust: Do whatever necessary to keep your dehumidifier "dust free". Dust in coil is very likely lead to compressor failure and may even lead to overheating problem.

4) Exterior: You can use sponge and detergent to clean the exterior, but make sure you don't run water on the dehumidifeir that may soak the touchpad.

5) Condenser Coils:  It is very important to make sure the coils are dry when you are performing maintenance.  You can use a vacuum to remove dust on and between the coils.

6) Fan Motor:  Apply oil to the fan motor if it is necessary.

7) Pump System: Inspect it regularly to make sure it is operating effectively.

Annual maintenance to your dehumidifier will not only reduce the risk of fire hazard caused by dehumidifeir, it will also allow your dehumidifier to save more energy and work longer.
